May Has Always Belonged to Women

There is something about May that feels different from every other month. The air changes. Things that were sitting still start moving again. If you have ever felt a pull toward starting something new in May — a project, a practice, a conversation with yourself — you are not imagining it. You are picking up on something humanity has understood for a very long time.

Long before any modern tradition, the Ancient Greeks dedicated May to Artemis — the goddess of life, nature and raw feminine power. She was associated with the untamed, with things that grow freely without being forced. The Romans followed with Flora, the goddess of blooms and new beginnings. They held festivals in her honour every spring, asking for everything in the world to flourish. These were not small observances. They were full cultural celebrations built around the understanding that this time of year carries a particular feminine energy — one that creates, renews and brings things forward.

In medieval Europe, May 1 was marked as the official start of new growth. Communities gathered, rituals were held, winter was declared over. The feminine energy of the season was so widely recognised that it eventually became woven into Catholic tradition — and May became the month dedicated to Mother Mary.

What strikes me about all of these traditions — spanning different cultures, different centuries, different belief systems — is that they all arrived at the same understanding. May belongs to the feminine. To creation. To the energy that makes things bloom.

Every culture, in its own language, found a way to say the same thing. This month holds something that deserves to be honoured.

We chose May 1 as the launch date for HerAwaken Summit Series for exactly this reason. There is something fitting about beginning a conversation about feminine power in a month that humanity has spent thousands of years dedicating to it. Artemis, Flora, Mary — different names, different traditions, the same underlying truth. The feminine force is a force of creation and renewal. And May is when it comes fully alive.

HerAwaken is our contribution to that long conversation. Every Friday for 15 weeks, we are gathering women from around the world to explore what it actually means to live as a whole woman — in your career, your relationships, your health, your money, your sense of self. This is the Spring and Summer series. The Fall and Winter series follows. And then we begin again — because this conversation does not have a finish line.

May is a beautiful place to start. And we are glad you are starting it with us.
